Overview
Traverse Vatnajokull — Europe's largest glacier, covering 8% of Iceland's surface area — on cross-country skis over 5-7 days from the glacial outlet at Skaftafell to Egilsstadir in the east. The flat central plateau at 1,800 m is a featureless white expanse navigated by GPS; visibility can drop to zero in any month. Below the plateau, outlet glaciers descend through icefalls and crevasse fields requiring rope team techniques and crevasse rescue preparedness.
