Overview

March and April are Svalbard's sweet spot: the sun is back, the island is still frozen solid, and a snowmobile will take you in a day to places a ski expedition needs a week to reach. Guided trips run out of Longyearbyen up Adventdalen and over glaciated passes to Tempelfjorden or clear across Spitsbergen to the east coast, where the sea ice stretches away towards Barentsoya and the polar bear becomes a genuine prospect - watched from a respectful distance, engines idling, beside a guide whose rifle is not a prop but a legal requirement here. The riding itself is a joy - throttle, balance and 60 kilometres of untracked white valley - but the cold is the variable that separates good trips from miserable ones: wind chill at speed hits minus 30 even on mild days, so use every layer the operator issues and tape hand warmers to your camera batteries. Early season may still deliver aurora above the headlights; by late April the light never leaves. No licence beyond a driving licence is needed, and operators brief novices thoroughly. Around £2,500 covers five days from Longyearbyen with machines, suits, guiding and hut or camp nights.
