Overview

Backpack through the Brooks Range in Gates of the Arctic National Park — the northernmost national park in the United States, with no roads, no trails, no facilities, and no rangers in most of the park. The wilderness is accessed by bush plane from Fairbanks or Bettles to a gravel bar landing strip. Grizzly bears, wolves, caribou, and wolverines are the primary inhabitants; human visitors number in the hundreds per year. Navigation is by map and compass through tundra, river valleys, and unnamed passes. The solitude here is absolute.
