Mozambique Pemba and Quirimbas Diving

Overview

The Quirimbas Archipelago in northern Mozambique — 32 coral islands scattered across 250 km of Indian Ocean coastline — offers pristine diving on reefs that have seen minimal fishing pressure for decades. Dugong and whale shark sightings are regular; the humpback whale migration passes July to October. Ibo Island at the southern end of the archipelago is a crumbling Portuguese colonial gem with 16th-century fortifications and resident metalworkers maintaining ancient craft traditions. Pemba is the jumping-off point by light aircraft or dhow.
