Overview

The Red Sea is one of the world's premier liveaboard diving destinations — warm, clear water, shallow-growing hard coral in superb condition, and a pelagic scene that delivers hammerhead sharks, oceanic whitetips, and thresher sharks at the Brothers Islands and Daedalus Reef. The classic southern liveaboard circuit from Hurghada runs to Ras Mohammed (the submerged tip of the Sinai Peninsula), down the Egyptian coast past Sha'ab Abu Nuhas wreck site, and out to the offshore pinnacles. The Brothers (El Akhawein) are two tiny rocky islands in the open Red Sea, 60km offshore, that rise from 800m of water. The walls are covered in soft corals and home to schools of barracuda, jacks, and the resident oceanic whitetip sharks that were Jacques Cousteau's favourite Red Sea subject. Daedalus Reef adds hammerheads and schooling hammerhead sharks on the right swell and current. Liveaboard boats from Hurghada run 7-day circuits year-round. The boats range from basic to comfortable — look for ADORA or WADI GIN quality boats if budget allows. Nitrox is widely available for extending bottom time. Prices run USD 900–1,800 per person for a 7-night all-inclusive liveaboard. October–May is the prime season. Summer (June–September) is hot (air and water both 30°C+) but still excellent diving.
