Luang Prabang is Southeast Asia's most perfectly preserved UNESCO heritage town — a narrow peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, where 33 golden-roofed temples sit among French colonial villas, Buddhist monks in saffron robes perform the daily alms-giving (tak bat) at dawn, and the night market fills a single street with silk, paper lanterns, and sticky rice in a hundred variations. The approach matters: the classic arrival is the two-day slow boat from the Thai border at Huay Xai, drifting 300km down the Mekong on a wooden longboat, stopping at villages along the way. It is slow, it is occasionally uncomfortable, and it is one of the great river journeys in Southeast Asia. Beyond Luang Prabang, the Kuang Si waterfalls (turquoise tiered pools, 30km south), the mysterious Plain of Jars (megalithic stone vessels on a plateau in Phonsavanh), and Vang Vieng's karst limestone canyons extend a two-week Laos itinerary naturally. Budget travel in Laos is genuinely inexpensive — USD 50–80 per day for good guesthouses, local food, and transport. Dry season (November–April) is the standard visiting window. February and March see the lowest water on the Mekong (slow boat may be cancelled at extreme low water).
