Overview
Travel to the Kazakh eagle hunter communities of Mongolia's Bayan-Olgii province — the far western corner of the country bordering Russia, China, and Kazakhstan — to live with a nomadic family during the golden eagle hunting season. Eagle hunters (berkutchi) have practiced this art for thousands of years; eagles are trained from chicks to hunt fox and rabbit on horseback across snow-covered steppe. The Golden Eagle Festival in October draws dozens of hunters to compete. Horse-based travel to remote winter camps is the centrepiece.
