Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia · Western Australia
Ningaloo Reef is one of the world's largest fringing reefs, accessible directly from the beach — no boat required for much of it. The primary draw is whale shark encounters from March to July, when aggregations of 40+ individuals feed on coral spawn. Manta rays are resident year-round and humpback whale season runs August to October. Coral Bay and Exmouth serve as bases; liveaboard vessels offer deeper outer reef access. The water clarity here rivals the Maldives with far fewer crowds.
