Overview

Lemmenjoki is Finland's largest national park and one of Western Europe's biggest roadless areas, and the river that names it is the natural way in: you paddle an open canoe up a brown-gold corridor of boreal forest, past sandy eskers where reindeer come down to drink, with ospreys fishing ahead of the bow. Camp is a fire ring and a Lapland dusk that never quite arrives — in June and early July the midnight sun keeps the light golden at 2 a.m., and time goes pleasantly strange. Gold gives the trip its odd human thread: small-scale prospectors have worked the Lemmenjoki gravels since 1945, and you can still watch claim holders panning near the old Kultahamina landing. The catch is the mosquitoes, which in July are genuinely industrial — head nets and repellent are not optional. Rapids on the upper river are portaged on marked trails, so the route suits fit beginners with a guide. June to August is the season; around £900 for five days with canoe hire, transfers from Ivalo and wild camping.
