Overview
Ol Doinyo Lengai is the Mountain of God to the Maasai and the only active natrocarbonatite volcano on earth, erupting black carbonatite lava that turns white on contact with air. The 2962m summit is typically climbed overnight from Engare Sero village, 10-12 hours of steep loose volcanic ash scrambling to reach an active crater. The summit view across the Rift Valley to Lake Natron and Kilimanjaro in the distance is among Africa's most extraordinary.
