Overview
Mount Kenya's twin summits of Batian and Nelion are technical rock and ice climbs requiring rope and crampon work at 5,199 and 5,188 metres respectively, while the non-technical Point Lenana at 4,985 metres rewards high-altitude trekkers. The mountain straddles the equator at 17,053 feet and has a dramatically compressed ecology from equatorial rainforest to permanent glaciers in only a few vertical kilometres. The Lewis Glacier has shrunk by 90% since 1900.
