Overview

Hampi is what remains when a city of half a million — capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, described by Persian envoys as without equal in the world — is sacked and left for 450 years among granite boulders. The ruins scatter across 40 square kilometres of surreal rockscape along the Tungabhadra River: the Vittala Temple with its stone chariot and musical pillars, the royal enclosure's stepped tank and elephant stables, and the still-living Virupaksha temple, in worship since the 7th century, where the resident elephant blesses pilgrims each morning. Do it slowly, on wheels and feet together: hire a bicycle for the temple circuit, cross the river by coracle, and climb Matanga Hill for sunrise before the heat — 5 am, headtorch, and the whole boulder city turning gold beneath you is the trip's defining moment. November to February is the season; by April the granite bakes past 40°C. Guesthouses in Hampi Bazaar and across the river in Virupapur Gaddi are simple and cheap — £200 covers a very comfortable week including bikes and a local guide.
