Overview
The Sepik River is one of the world's great river systems and the living museum of Melanesian art and culture. Traditional spirit houses with carved totems, crocodile initiation ceremonies, and ancestral mask-making traditions survive in river communities largely unchanged by outside contact. Travelling by dugout canoe between villages with guides from the communities provides access to sacred traditions shared with genuine outsiders only rarely.
