Nuku Hiva · French Polynesia
The Marquesas Archipelago 1,400 kilometres northeast of Tahiti is the most remote inhabited island group in the world, reachable only by the freighter Aranui or by private yacht on a 3,000-kilometre ocean passage from Panama. The dramatic basalt valleys of Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa contain some of the largest tiki statues in Polynesia, and the interior jungle valleys remain largely unexplored. Herman Melville's Typee and Paul Gauguin's final paintings were inspired by these islands.
