Overview

North of Samburu the tarmac ends and the Mathews Range rises out of the acacia scrub like a forested island - ridges of cedar and ancient cycad that trap enough rain to stay green while the plains below crack in the heat. You trek with Samburu guides and camels carrying camp, following elephant paths through forest that shelters buffalo, colobus monkeys and the elephants themselves, climbing high to escape the furnace of the flats. The moment that sells it: cresting a ridge at dawn to watch Grevy's zebra grazing a kilometre below, with no vehicle, fence or lodge in any direction. Walking here recalibrates you fast - you learn wind direction, fresh dung and silence, because everything is met on foot. Nothing about the trip is casual: it is guided camping only, water comes from forest springs through a filter, and the nearest hospital is a day away, so evacuation cover and a proper first-aid kit are non-negotiable. Time it for the dry windows - January to February or July to September. Around £1,200 buys a week with guides, camels and camp crew, arranged from Wamba or through one of the Namunyak conservancy operators.
