Overview

Mountain biking the High Atlas strings Berber villages together on mule tracks, singletrack and old colonial pistes, with mint tea appearing whenever you stop. The classic traverse crosses the range over Tizi n'Tichka at 2,260m, then swaps tarmac for the Ounila valley's magnificent descent past Telouet's crumbling kasbah to the film-set fortress of Aït Benhaddou; further east the red walls of the Dades and Todgha gorges give canyon riding beneath 300m cliffs before the land tips towards the Draa's palm oases and the desert fringe. Remoteness is the planning factor: there are no bike shops in the mountains, so carry spares for everything and know your own mechanics, or ride with an operator whose support vehicle does. Nights in village gîtes and kasbah guesthouses are the trip's soul — basic, warm and cash-only, so carry small dirham notes. March-May and September-October dodge both snow on the passes and killing summer heat. A supported week from Marrakech runs about £900 including guide, vehicle and half-board.
