Paddle the Lower Zambezi in open canoes, camping on white sandbanks while hippos and elephants drink metres away in the golden late-afternoon light. Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park lines the northern bank; across the river lies Zimbabwe's Mana Pools, so the whole valley works as one vast wildlife corridor with barely any boat traffic. On guided 4-6 day canoe safaris you will watch elephants swimming the channels, crocodiles basking on every bar, and fish eagles calling from dead trees that overhang the current. The hippo protocol is the trip: your guide reads the pods and taps the hull to announce you, threading the quiet water behind sandbars while you keep your strokes calm — this is one wildlife environment where obedience is everything. Nights are wild-camped under mosquito nets with lions audible across the water; malaria prophylaxis is essential. May to October is the dry-season window, with September-October thickest with game.
