Sri Pada or Adam's Peak rises to 2,243 metres in the Hill Country of Sri Lanka and is sacred to four religions simultaneously, with each claiming the footprint-shaped depression on the summit as belonging to Adam, the Buddha, Vishnu, or St Thomas. The pilgrimage season from December to May draws tens of thousands of Buddhist pilgrims climbing by night with lanterns to reach the summit for sunrise. The 5,500 stone steps are climbed by barefoot pilgrims and trekking tourists alike.
