Cachora · Peru
Choquequirao is often called the other Machu Picchu, an Inca citadel abandoned at Spanish conquest and not excavated until the 20th century, accessible only on foot after a two-day approach from Cachora. The descent and ascent of 1,500 metres to the Apurimac River and back makes this one of the most demanding day hikes in Peru, but the site itself is visited by fewer than 50 people per day compared to Machu Picchu's 3,000. The planned cable car would change this forever.
