Port-aux-Francais · France
The Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean are among the most remote places on Earth, accessible only by the French resupply vessel Marion Dufresne four times per year. The archipelago of 300 islands hosts millions of king penguins, elephant seals, and wandering albatrosses on a landscape of basalt mountains, glaciers, and sub-Antarctic tussock grass. The Cook Glacier and the volcanic Mount Ross at 1,850 metres are the main trekking objectives on this extraordinary French overseas territory.
