Naha · Japan
The Kerama Islands 40 kilometres west of Okinawa have some of the clearest water on Earth with visibility regularly exceeding 30 metres, and the Kerama Blue colour of the water is so distinctive it has given its name to a specific shade in Japanese aesthetics. Humpback whales visit the Kerama Straits to calve between January and March, and the coral reef quality at Zamami and Tokashiki islands is largely undamaged. The hammerhead shark aggregation at nearby Yonaguni adds diving depth.
