Overview

Three small coral islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, reachable by a 20-minute fast boat from Bangsal harbour. No motorised vehicles on any of the Gilis — just bicycles, horse carts, and foot traffic on sand paths. The pace drops to something close to silence. Gili Trawangan is the largest and most social, with beach bars and a sunset strip that fills at dusk. Gili Meno in the middle is the quietest — a handful of guesthouses, a turtle sanctuary, and coral gardens that begin metres from the beach. Gili Air combines the two: enough life to feel connected, enough quiet to sleep well. The snorkelling is the main event. The house reef at Gili Meno holds the densest population of sea turtles in Indonesia — not captive or baited, just resident. They feed on the seagrass at depths of 3–8m and are accustomed to swimmers. Green turtles and hawksbills both use the reef. You will see turtles. The coral restoration projects around all three islands are among the most successful in Southeast Asia. Biorock structures, planted with coral fragments, have created artificial reef systems that host remarkable diversity: lionfish, bumphead parrotfish, and blacktip reef sharks patrol the outer slopes. No experience is required — rent a mask and fins from any beach shack and walk in.
