Overview

The Toraja highlands of Sulawesi in Indonesia maintain one of the world's most elaborate death cult traditions, with funeral ceremonies involving the sacrifice of water buffalo on a scale that can cost a family years of savings. The traditional tongkonan boat-shaped houses with their soaring curved roofs and the cliff-face burial sites of tau-tau effigies are unique to this culture. Trekking between villages during funeral season allows respectful participation in ceremonies that are genuinely central to Torajan identity.
