Kaolack · Senegal
The Sine Saloum Delta in central Senegal is a vast mangrove-and-sandbank labyrinth where the Serer people have lived on shell midden islands for 3,000 years. Kayaking between the Serer villages visits their traditional architecture, their oyster farming on mangrove roots, and the evening ceremonies of the griots. The delta attracts enormous flocks of flamingos and pelicans, and the offshore Saloum Islands marine national park protects dolphin pods. This is West Africa at its most quietly magnificent.
