Overview
The Darvaza Gas Crater in Turkmenistan, the Door to Hell, has been burning continuously since Soviet engineers accidentally ignited a natural gas pocket in 1971 and the 70-metre-wide crater has burned ever since. The surrounding Karakum Desert tour from Ashgabat, the world's whitest capital city with its forest of marble buildings, passes through sand dunes, yurt camps, and the dramatic Yangykala Canyon. Turkmenistan is one of the world's most isolated countries with strict visa and guide requirements.
