Overview

On the upper Zambezi above Victoria Falls you travel as quietly as the river itself: a stable Canadian canoe, a guide reading the water, and a floodplain wilderness along the Mosi-oa-Tunya park where elephants wade out to drink metres from your gunwale. Hippos are the serious business here -- guides skirt the pods with practised care and you learn to love a wide channel -- while fish eagles call from the winterthorns and sunset turns the whole river to hammered copper. Nights are island camps with lions sometimes audible across the water. Downstream the river simply vanishes: the 1,700-metre curtain of Victoria Falls drops 108 metres into the Batoka Gorge, and a soaking walk along the Zambian rim belongs in the trip -- the spray column is visible 30 kilometres away after the rains. Canoe safaris run best July to October, when water is low and game concentrates on the river; multi-day trips from Livingstone cost about 1,200-1,800 pounds all-in. Malaria prophylaxis is essential, and your guide's hippo instructions are not suggestions.
