Grytviken · South Georgia
South Georgia Island in the Southern Ocean is one of the world's great wildlife spectacles, with 300,000 king penguins at St Andrews Bay, 150,000 elephant seals, and the nesting grounds of the wandering albatross with its 3.5-metre wingspan. The island is reachable only by expedition yacht from the Falkland Islands or as part of an Antarctic cruise. Ernest Shackleton's grave at Grytviken and the whaling station ruins add historical gravitas.
