Overview
The Ausangate Circuit in the Cordillera Vilcanota south of Cusco is one of South America's most spectacular high-altitude treks, circling Ausangate peak at 6,384 metres through a landscape of turquoise glacial lakes, red and yellow mineral springs, and vicuna herds. The route crosses four passes above 5,000 metres and passes through Quechua herding communities where alpaca wool weaving is still practised. The adjacent Rainbow Mountain has become famous, but this circuit remains the authentic experience.
