Overview

Spiti is Ladakh's rawer, quieter cousin: a high-altitude cold desert where the turquoise Spiti River cuts through crumbling ochre badlands and thousand-year-old monasteries balance on eroded crags. By motorcycle from Manali, the Atal Tunnel now shortcuts the old Rohtang crossing into Lahaul, but the real filter is the Gramphu–Batal–Kaza road: 60-odd kilometres of rock, dust and snowmelt streams that must be forded before afternoon melt swells them, then over Kunzum La (about 4,550 m) with its wind-torn prayer flags and down to Kaza. From Kaza the set pieces stack up — Key Monastery photogenic above the river bend, Kibber and Komic villages above 4,200 m, the fossil village of Langza beneath its giant Buddha, Dhankar's cliff-top gompa, and the side trip into Pin Valley's snow-leopard country. Fuel is the trip's arithmetic: Kaza has the only pump in the valley, so carry spare litres. Acclimatise a night in Manali and consider riding the loop clockwise — up via Shimla and Kinnaur, out over Kunzum — for gentler altitude gain. Season is mid-June to September. Around £700 covers 12 days with bike hire at £12–15 a day, homestays and dal-heavy dinners.
