Packrafting the remote river valleys of Fiordland National Park in New Zealand — inflating a 2.5 kg raft to cross the Dusky Sound, float the Arthur River, or descend the Seaforth to the sea — opens up wilderness that is physically inaccessible by foot or boat alone. Fiordland receives up to 8 m of rain per year; the rivers flood rapidly and dramatically. Floatplane access, river knowledge, and self-rescue skills are prerequisites. The reward is primeval rainforest with no other human presence.
