Overview
The Highlands of Iceland — accessible only in summer when the F-roads open — are the emptiest landscape in Europe. The Fjallabak Reserve and Sprengisandur highland route cross black lava plateaus, active geothermal areas, and the vast Hofsjökull and Langjökull ice caps. The interior has no huts in some sections; navigation across featureless lava desert requires GPS. This is the Iceland no tourist bus reaches.
