Overview
The seven Aeolian Islands north of Sicily — Lipari, Vulcano, Stromboli, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, and Panarea — form an active volcanic archipelago accessible by sea kayak from Milazzo. Paddling between islands takes advantage of the thermal winds and the reliable summer calm to cross channels up to 22 km. Stromboli's permanent eruption (every 15–20 minutes) is best viewed from the sea at night; Vulcano's fumarole beach is a sulphurous natural spa.
