The Otter Trail is South Africa's oldest and most oversubscribed hiking trail — 42 km along the Garden Route coastline from Storms River Mouth to Nature's Valley, crossing 11 rivers (some requiring swimming) through dense indigenous coastal forest of Outeniqua yellowwood and milkwood trees. Cape clawless otters, Knysna loeries, and dolphins surfing the shore swell are the companions. Permit bookings open 12 months in advance and close within hours.
