Overview
The Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia are an eroded basalt plateau dissected into dramatic table mountains, with escarpments dropping 1,500 m to the Sudanese lowlands. The park is one of the last habitats for the Gelada baboon — troops of 1,000 graze the cliff-edge meadows — as well as the Ethiopian wolf and Walia ibex. The 5-day circuit from Sankaber to Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest peak at 4,550 m, combines serious altitude with extraordinary wildlife.
