Tokushima · Japan
The Shikoku Henro is an 1,200 km walking pilgrimage circling the island of Shikoku, visiting 88 Buddhist temples associated with the monk Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi). Pilgrims walk in white robes carrying a wooden staff, believed to embody the spirit of Kōbō Daishi himself. The route takes 30–60 days depending on pace and includes mountain sections, coastal paths, and city temple visits. The culture of osetai — gifts of food and money given to pilgrims — is extraordinary.
