Overview
The ancient Silk Road from Xi'an to Istanbul traces 7,000 km of trade routes through China's Gobi Desert, Central Asian steppes, Persian caravanserais, and Anatolian highlands. By a combination of train, bus, and shared taxi, the journey moves through Dunhuang's Mogao Caves, Uzbekistan's Registan Square, Turkmenistan's Gates of Hell, and Iranian bazaars where saffron and pistachios overflow in technicolour piles.
