Zermatt · Switzerland
The Matterhorn (4,478 m) is the most recognisable mountain silhouette on earth and the Hörnli Ridge — its northeast arête — is the standard route. The climb involves 1,200 m of mixed rock and ice with considerable route-finding challenge and objective rockfall hazard, particularly above the Hörnli Hut. A private guide is strongly recommended for all but the most experienced alpinists. The summit view west into Italy and east to the Swiss Alps is unforgettable.
