Huemul Circuit above the Southern Ice Field

Overview

The Huemul Circuit is El Chaltén's graduate course. While the crowds queue for Laguna de los Tres, this four-day loop swings south around Cerro Huemul to the one place a trekker can stand and see the Southern Patagonian Ice Field entire: from Paso del Viento the white plain runs to the horizon, cracked like dried paint, with Viedma Glacier calving into its lake below you. Few marked trails anywhere buy a view this expensive for this little technical climbing. The price is paid in other currencies. Two river crossings are rigged as zip-lines — you clip a harness and pulley to a steel cable and haul yourself across the Río Túnel — and the park office checks you are carrying both before issuing the free permit. Then there is the wind: Paso del Viento and Paso Huemul earn their names, and parties regularly hold camp for a day when the ice field exhales. Everything stages out of El Chaltén, three hours from El Calafate's airport; harness kits hire cheaply in town. Camps are free and basic. November to March. Budget around £420 self-sufficient including kit hire, or £700+ with a local guide — worth considering, as navigation on the moraine above Lago Viedma is loose in every sense.
