Carretera Austral Self-Drive to Villa O'Higgins

Overview

Chile's Route 7 runs 1,240 km from Puerto Montt to the road-end hamlet of Villa O'Higgins, stitched together by ferries where the fjords interrupt it. Driving its full length is Patagonia at drip-feed pace: temperate rainforest, hanging glaciers, turquoise rivers and pioneer villages that still feel a day beyond the map. The moments: the Ventisquero Colgante hanging glacier calving over its lagoon in Queulat; kayaking into the marble caves at Puerto Río Tranquilo; Cerro Castillo's basalt spires above the road's finest pass; and the final ferry-and-gravel push to O'Higgins, where the southern ice field blocks all further progress and the visitor book reads like a club. The variables: the Hornopirén–Caleta Gonzalo ferries must be booked weeks ahead in January and February; long ripio sections eat tyres, so take a 4x4 with two spares; fuel planning matters south of Cochrane. Fly into Puerto Montt, out of Balmaceda, and swallow the one-way hire fee — it buys you twelve days instead of twenty. Around £1,700 per person with cabañas, ferries and asado.
