Overview

Between Sweden and Finland the Baltic shatters into the Åland archipelago — six and a half thousand islands of pink rapakivi granite, pine and fishing hamlets, threaded by water so sheltered it often behaves like a lake. For six days you island-hop east from Mariehamn, choosing each night's skerry under everyman's right: land, pitch on sun-warmed rock, swim in brackish water that barely tastes of salt, under a midsummer sun that never properly sets. The rhythm is the reward — sea eagles overhead, eider flotillas parting round your bow, an evening sauna at a guest harbour, silence everywhere else. Kökar, far out in the southeast, is the classic objective: a bare outer-archipelago parish with an 18th-century church and more sheep than people. The variable that catches people out is fetch: the inner channels flatter you, then a southwesterly builds over open Baltic gaps and the crossings turn serious, so plan routes with escape options. Reach Mariehamn by ferry from Stockholm, Turku or Helsinki; outfitters there rent proper sea kayaks and run guided weeks from about £850. June and July give endless light; August adds warmer swimming and the first dark nights for stargazing.
