Overview

Europe's second-longest river ends not with a city but with a wilderness: 4,000 square kilometres of reedbeds, floating islands and secret channels where the Danube unravels into the Black Sea. By canoe you travel it at heron pace — gliding lily-covered canals off the Sulina arm while squadrons of great white pelicans wheel overhead from the largest colony outside Africa, kingfishers strafing the bow, pygmy cormorants drying their wings on every snag. The delta is a culture as much as an ecosystem. Nights are spent in the guesthouses of Lipovan fishing villages — Mila 23, Crișan — eating storceag, the local fish soup, with hosts whose families have netted these channels for three centuries. The strangest afternoon comes at Letea: an ancient oak forest draped in lianas, wild horses grazing between sand dunes — inside Europe. The gateway is Tulcea, four hours from Bucharest, where guided canoe safaris depart with support boats carrying the luggage; six days runs about £720 with all meals. May-June brings peak birdlife, September migration and gold light; high summer serves heat and mosquitoes in industrial quantities. Bring optics before optimism — the birds are the point.
