Overview

Mount Athabasca is where Canadian mountaineering begins — literally, for generations of climbers. The 3,491 m peak rises directly above the Columbia Icefield on the Icefields Parkway, and its North Glacier and AA Col routes pack everything into a single long day: a 3 a.m. start from the climbers' car park, crevassed glacier travel by headtorch, a steepening 40-degree snow ramp over the bergschrund and a final windy ridge to a summit overlooking the largest icefield in the Rockies. The sunrise is the reason people come back. From half-height, the light floods across the Athabasca Glacier and catches Snow Dome and Andromeda in sequence, while the Parkway's tour buses are still hours from waking. The catch is conditions: the bergschrund opens through the season, the glacier's crevasse bridges rot in warm spells, and ACMG guides frequently reroute or turn parties around — flexibility is part of the deal. Base in Jasper, one hour north, and climb June to September. A guided one-day ascent costs about £550 with a pre-trip skills evening; many treat it as the graduation climb after a crevasse-rescue course. Fitness for 1,500 m of ascent is the entry requirement.
