Rainier by the Disappointment Cleaver

Overview

Somewhere above Ingraham Flats, headtorches string out along the Cleaver and the whole of Puget Sound glitters 4,000 metres below your crampons. Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48, and the Disappointment Cleaver route is America's classic apprenticeship in big-mountain climbing: rope teams, crevasse bridges, a 1 a.m. alpine start from Camp Muir and a lung-scouring push to the 4,392 m crater rim. The rhythm is simple and brutal. Day one climbs from the wildflower meadows of Paradise to Camp Muir at 3,072 m; day two is rest, rigging and an early night; summit day is eight to twelve hours on ice. The variable that catches people is not fitness but weather — Rainier manufactures its own storms, and roughly half of all attempts turn around. Base yourself in Ashford, at the park's Nisqually entrance. Guided climbs (RMI, IMG, Alpine Ascents) run May to September and book out months ahead; budget around £1,700 for a four-day programme plus the park's climbing fee. Crampon and ice-axe skills are taught, but arrive hill-fit or the Muir snowfield will find you out.
