Mount Hood via the Hogsback

Overview

You leave Timberline Lodge in the dark, climb the groomed edge of the Palmer snowfield, and by 4 a.m. you are standing in Devil's Kitchen with sulphur in your nostrils and a white spine of snow — the Hogsback — arcing up towards the Pearly Gates. Mount Hood, 3,429 m, is Oregon's mountain and the most-climbed glaciated peak in North America, and this pre-dawn theatre is why. Do not let the statistics fool you into complacency. The final 300 m through the Pearly Gates is genuine 35-degree climbing between rime-plastered walls, falling ice funnels through it as the sun hits the summit slopes, and the bergschrund below the Hogsback swallows careless glissaders most seasons. The climb is short but the margins are, too: summit at dawn, be off the steep ground by mid-morning. The logistics are the easiest in this category — Portland is ninety minutes away, and you can drink an espresso at the 1937 WPA-built Timberline Lodge an hour after descending. Climb April to early June; register at the trailhead and buy the modest Mount Hood climbing permit online. Guided one-day ascents run about £550. Crampons that fit and an early alarm are the whole game.
