While three hundred permit-holders zigzag up the trail on the far side, you are front-pointing up a 300-metre snow couloir with the East Face towering overhead — John Muir's own 1873 line to the highest summit in the contiguous United States, 4,421 m. The Mountaineers Route turns Whitney from a long walk into a proper climb: the scramble through the Ebersbacher Ledges, a camp beneath the vertical mile of granite at Iceberg Lake, then the couloir and a final exposed 120 m to the summit plateau. Do it in spring, when consolidated snow makes the gully a clean ice-axe-and-crampons romp rather than a loose-scree misery. The catch is the 'final 400' above the notch — icy, steep and the site of most accidents; many guided parties rope up or traverse left onto easier ground. Base in Lone Pine on Highway 395, all diners and Wild-West film history. Permits are by lottery through recreation.gov in February; guided three- or four-day ascents (Sierra Mountain Guides and others) run about £1,100. Acclimatise — you sleep at 3,800 m the night before the top.
