Overview

Fuvahmulah is a one-island atoll in the far south of the Maldives with no lagoon, no resort sprawl and a harbour mouth that has become the most reliable tiger shark dive on Earth. Fishermen have cleaned their catch here for generations, and the tigers — three to four metres long, unhurried, many known individually to the local guides — patrol the shallows daily. You kneel in a briefed line at eight to twelve metres while they cruise a body-length overhead; the choreography is strict and the adrenaline is not optional. Beyond the harbour, the island's plateau drops sheer into blue that produces thresher sharks at dawn, oceanic mantas, and in season mola and hammerheads. This is big-animal diving with real protocol: listen to the briefing and keep your hands folded. Fly to Malé and take the domestic hop south, staying in guesthouses under local island rules — no alcohol, modest dress in the village. December to April brings the calmest seas. A week with daily two-tank diving and three tiger sessions runs about £1,700 before flights.
