Overview

Ohrid once held 365 churches — one for every day — and what survives makes this small lakeside town the Balkans' richest concentration of Byzantine art. The image everyone comes for is real: the Church of St John at Kaneo on its clifftop, lake three million years old below, mountains of Albania across the water. But the substance is inside — the eleventh-century frescoes of St Sophia, and Plaošnik, where St Clement founded what is often called Europe's first university and taught the Cyrillic-precursor Glagolitic script. Six days lets the town breathe: morning fresco visits before the day-trippers, afternoons swimming from rocky platforms below Kaneo, a boat day to the springs at Sveti Naum monastery where the lake wells up through white sand, and an hour with the Talev family, who have guarded the secret of Ohrid pearl emulsion — made from a local fish's scales — for four generations. Fly to Ohrid direct in summer, or via Skopje (three hours by bus). July–August brings festival season and crowds; May, June and September are the sweet spot. Around £500–£650 for six days with a guesthouse and boat trips — the Balkans' best-value great town.
