Meteora Monasteries and Hermit Paths

Overview

Six monasteries balance on sandstone towers six hundred metres above the Thessalian plain, built by monks who hauled everything — timber, wine, each other — up by rope and windlass. Meteora is best understood on foot: the old monopatia footpaths that linked the monasteries before roads still climb through the towers from Kastraki village, and walking them turns a coach-trip spectacle back into a pilgrimage. Over five days you visit all six living monasteries — Great Meteoron's katholikon and ossuary, Varlaam's ascent tower, tiny Roussanou wrapped by cliffs, St Stephen's where the nuns sing vespers — and walk the hermit routes past abandoned sketes and the painted cave chapels of Badova. The classic evening finishes at Sunset Rock above Kastraki as the towers go amber and the crag martins swirl. Each monastery keeps its own closing day and hours, so plan the rota before you go; dress codes are enforced (long skirts loaned at the door, shoulders covered). Kalabaka is the access town, reachable by direct train from Athens in about four hours. Five days with a guesthouse base, one guided walking day and entry fees runs about £550–£700.
