Copal smoke rolls down the steps of Santo Tomás church while flower sellers spread gladioli across the stones — Thursday and Sunday in Chichicastenango are among the great market days of the Americas, K'iche' Maya traders filling every lane with textiles, masks and fruit. This eight-day highland circuit starts there, then drops to Lake Atitlán, ringed by three volcanoes, for slow lancha-hopping between villages: the natural-dye weaving cooperatives of San Juan La Laguna, the shrine of Maximón — the cigar-smoking folk saint — in Santiago Atitlán, and painting workshops in San Pedro. You finish among the coffee farms and baroque ruins of Antigua. What catches people out is the afternoon chop on the lake — cross early, when the water is glass — and the Xocomil wind that makes late boats a soaking. Dry season, November to April, is market weather at its best. Shuttle buses link everything; no driving needed.
