Monasteries of Armenia: Geghard to Tatev

Overview

Armenia adopted Christianity in 301 AD, before Rome, and its monasteries sit in landscapes that make the point emphatically. At Geghard, chambers hewn straight into the mountain hold acoustics so pure that a single sung note hangs for seconds. At Khor Virap, the chapel where St Gregory was imprisoned stands against the full white bulk of Mount Ararat across the Turkish border. And at Tatev you ride the Wings of Tatev — at 5.7km the world's longest reversible cable car — over the Vorotan gorge to a ninth-century complex on the cliff edge. This is an eight-day road journey from Yerevan: Geghard and the pagan temple of Garni, Khor Virap at dawn, Noravank glowing red in its canyon at dusk, Areni's 6,100-year-old cave winery, then south to Tatev and back via the UNESCO-listed Haghpat and Sanahin in the green Debed gorge. Go May–June or September–October; July hazes out Ararat and winter closes the passes. Self-drive is easy on the main axes, or a driver-guide costs little more shared between four. Roughly £850–£1,050 per person with guesthouses, khorovats dinners and the cable car.
